Pet emergency kit and plan, checked twice a year

Builds a grab-and-go kit and evacuation plan for your dog, cat or other animals, then reminds you to refresh food and medicine.

What it does

Ready.gov says pets need to be in your family's emergency plan: if officials tell you to evacuate, your pets should evacuate too, and many public shelters and hotels don't allow pets inside. Your bot walks you through Ready.gov's pet checklist: a safe place you could take them, a buddy system with a neighbor or relative who can grab them if you can't, an up-to-date microchip, and two kits (a bigger one for sheltering at home and a light one for leaving). It tailors the list to your animals (several days of food and water, extra medicine, first aid items your vet recommends, a backup leash and ID tag, a carrier for each pet, sanitation supplies, a photo of you with your pet, a favorite toy), and reminds you twice a year to swap out food and medicine before they go stale. It pairs with the family emergency kit page. It never buys supplies for you.

Copy-paste prompt

Help me build a pet emergency kit and plan using Ready.gov's "Prepare Your Pets for Disasters" guidance.

Our animals: [e.g. 1 large dog, 2 indoor cats / backyard chickens / a horse]. Medicines they take: [list or "none"]. Where we live and common emergencies: [e.g. hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfire, winter storms].

1. Plan: help me write down a safe place we could take our pets (many public shelters and hotels don't allow pets), a buddy (neighbor, friend or relative) who could care for or evacuate them if I can't, and a reminder to keep microchip contact info up to date with an out-of-area emergency contact. I fill in names and numbers myself.
2. Kits: make two checklists, one larger for sheltering at home and one lightweight for evacuating, from Ready.gov's list: several days of food in an airtight, waterproof container; water and a bowl; extra medicine in a waterproof container; a first aid kit (tell me to ask my vet what fits); collar with ID tag plus a backup leash, collar and tag; copies of registration and records in a waterproof bag and saved electronically; a carrier or crate for each pet; litter, bags, paper towels and other sanitation items; a photo of me with my pet; familiar toys, treats or bedding. Mark what I already have.
3. Carrier practice for cats and small dogs: leave the carrier out and open, treats near or inside it, a familiar blanket. Note where each pet likes to hide.
4. If we have large animals, add Ready.gov's extras: ID on every animal, evacuate earlier, two mapped routes, trailers and handlers lined up.
5. Every 6 months, remind me to check that food and medicine are fresh and the plan is current.

Keep reminders under 6 lines. Never buy supplies for me.
