Paycheck withholding check: find the right pay stub numbers for the IRS estimator

Type in your pay stub's line labels and amounts; get which numbers go where in the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator, plus a life-change check.

What it does

No bot required, and the chat AI doesn't do the tax math. The IRS's free Tax Withholding Estimator does. The IRS says to check your withholding every January, and again after a major life change: a new job or other paid work, a big change in income, marriage, divorce or separation, a birth or adoption, or buying a home. If you change your withholding during the year, you may need to update it again in late December. You'll need your most recent pay stubs (and your spouse's if you'll file jointly), plus last year's return if you have other income or might itemize. It takes about 25 minutes, doesn't ask for your name, Social Security number, address or bank account, and doesn't save or share your answers with the IRS. It's for people with a W-2 job or a pension with federal tax withheld; it can't estimate a job you haven't been paid from yet, and nonresidents use a different IRS notice. The estimator's FAQ says the most common mistakes come from entering the wrong pay stub lines. Federal withholding might be labeled FIT, FITW, FITC, Fed W/H, Fed tax, Fed withholding or Federal income tax. Any extra withholding you asked for may sit on a separate line you have to add in. Don't include state, local, Social Security or Medicare amounts. And the "this pay period" amount is different from the year-to-date total. Type the line labels and amounts from your latest stub into any chat AI (not a photo with your Social Security or account numbers) and it sorts which number goes where, checks your life changes, and explains in plain words what the W-4 steps do. Then you run the estimator yourself and give the pre-filled W-4 to your employer. It's a pay-stub reading helper, not tax advice.

Help me get ready to use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Use the IRS's "Tax Withholding Estimator" page and its FAQs as background. Don't calculate my tax or tell me what to put on my W-4; the estimator does that.

From my most recent pay stub (labels and amounts only, no Social Security, employee ID or account numbers):
- Pay date: [ ]; pay frequency: [weekly / every 2 weeks / twice a month / monthly]
- Lines with amounts this period and year to date: [e.g. "FITW 82.10 / 1,970.40", "SS 95.00 / 2,280.00", "MED 22.20 / 532.80", "State 30.00 / 720.00", "Addl Fed 20.00 / 480.00"]
Spouse's stub too (if we file jointly): [same list or "n/a"]
Other income this year: [side gig / self-employment / none]
Life changes this year: [new job / income change / marriage, divorce or separation / new baby or adoption / bought a home / none]

1. Tell me which line is federal income tax withheld, for this pay period and for the year to date. Point out any extra federal withholding line I should add in.
2. List the lines that do NOT go in the federal withholding boxes (state, local, Social Security, Medicare and other deductions), so I don't mix them in.
3. Check my numbers make sense: this-period amounts should be no bigger than the year-to-date totals. Flag anything that looks off as "check your stub."
4. From my life changes, tell me if the IRS says now is a good time to check (every January, and after a new job, income change, marriage/divorce/separation, birth or adoption, or a home purchase), and what else to have ready (spouse's stub, last year's return if I have other income or might itemize).
5. In plain words, explain what the W-4 steps do: Step 3 lowers the tax withheld, Step 4(c) adds extra withholding, and 4(a)/4(b) change how much income is counted. If I have more than one job, the IRS FAQ says the adjustments go on the W-4 for the highest-paying job.
6. End with: run the estimator at irs.gov yourself, and give any new W-4 to your employer or payroll. This isn't tax advice.
